INTENSE WINDS FUEL LANDFILL FIRE
APRIL 6, 2024 - Lyons, KS
As high winds caused havoc from the Rocky Mountains to the Midwest, the Lyons-Rice County Fire Department responded to a fire at the county landfill just West of Lyons.
Chief Ed Feil stated that no mutual aid was needed but he did use personnel and apparatus from all eight stations in his department. The blaze was extinguished in six hours as multiple tenders continuously shuttled water from town.
Visibility was also hindered by wind-driven debris and dirt from surrounding fields that had been recently plowed for Spring planting. The smoke and debris often caused zero visibility for motorists on the adjacent Highway 96.
